Participants in Laureates & Leaders are expected to make every effort to attend events, including those targeted to their class year as well as all-class year events. Each participant is granted 2 unexcused absences each semester. If you cannot attend an event that you are required to go to, you can RSVP “No” and provide more context for your response. Should it fall into the categories below, you will be excused.

Examples of Excused Absences:

  • Class/lecture
  • Professor/TA office hours
  • Athletic commitment
  • Work commitment

All other absences need to be discussed with OME Staff in advance of the event and are subject to approval. If you have 2+ unexcused absences, it will impact your access to professional development funding. Continued unexcused absences may result in dismissal from the program.

Avoid these outcomes by RSVPing for events as appropriate and maintaining contact with OME Staff!

FYI/Upcoming: As a student in the Laurates & Leaders program, you will meet twice per semester (only once, sophomore fall) with your assigned L&L advisor. A separate email with details on scheduling an appointment will be sent after we receive your response to this form.

Laureates & Leaders professional development fund provides each member with $200 in funding for use toward professional development goals on an annual basis. Professional development indicates training or opportunities that will prepare you through experience, skill building, or otherwise for future success after MIT in the hopes of getting a PhD or MD/PhD.

The fund replenishes in accordance with MIT's fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Members can access their funding at any time during the year with assistance from OME staff. Program funding is tied to program participation and will be effected if not meeting check-in or attendance policy. Reimbursement will occur via direct deposit (if setup in Atlas) or paper check delivered to the OME (checks can be mailed home by special request).

Funding can be used for (this list is not exhaustive)

  • Internship-related travel expenses (e.g., airfare)
  • Conference-related expenses (e.g., registration, airfare, hotel)
  • Special program fees (e.g., Management Leadership for Tomorrow)
  • Skill building activities related to a future job (e.g., coding books, Coursera subscription, etc.)
  • Professional dress clothes
  • Other expenses approved by OME staff

The list above is not exhaustive. If you have questions about whether something would qualify as professional development, contact OME Staff to discuss.

Funding cannot be used for:

  • Electronics
  • Textbooks for classes
  • MIT fees (e.g., registration hold fees, etc.)
  • Meals

Each L&L student is able to be reimbursed for the following items automatically for either a PhD or MD/PhD. These resources are provided throughout your time in L&L and do not reset each calendar. As stated in the professional development funding section, funding is tied to programmatic participation.

PhD Reimbursement

  1. One GRE Registration Fee
  2. GRE Preparation (up to $200)
  3. 5 GRE Score Reports
  4. 3 Application Fee Waivers

MD/PhD Reimbursement

  1. 2 MCAT Registration
  2. MCAT Preparation (Up to $400)
  3. COPA Fee
  4. 5 Secondary Application Fees
Participation in the program will be evaluated on a per semester basis. Benefits provided by the Laureates and Leaders Program are contingent upon full participation in activities and compliance with the program’s requirements. I understand that failure to comply with any of the above sections may result in dismissal from the program.

Our first L&L event together will be a general body meeting for the Class of 2027 cohort! Below are details of the event and RSVP for the event.
